Plastic pollution. It’s on everyone’s mind nowadays, and for good reason. It’s an economic, environmental and aesthetic challenge that forces us to confront our global human legacy.
The good news is that this challenge is inspiring a worldwide creative surge in search of solutions.
Showcasing Canada’s Circular Economy Innovators
For the second year in a row, the National Zero Waste Council has teamed up Think Beyond Plasticâ„¢ to identify and celebrate Canadian entrepreneurs at the forefront of the Circular Economy.
At last year’s Zero Waste Conference, they introduced the Canadian Innovation Showcase to highlight homegrown circular economy solutions, and featured the work of Bioastra Technologies, Pyrowave, Soapstand and Sustainable Produce Urban Delivery (SPUD).
Canadian Innovation Showcase from the 2018 Zero Waste Conference
This year, the Canadian Innovation Showcase specifically targets plastics, and will look at waste prevention, innovative business models and new materials in three critical areas:
- Food Packaging
Innovations that prevent food loss and waste, decrease the need for packaging and lower GHG emissions. - Textiles & Clothing
Innovations that prevent textiles from building up in landfills and keep plastic microfibres out of our oceans. - Marine Plastics
Innovations in technology and business models that prevent plastics from entering marine environments.
Evaluation Criteria
Submissions will be judged on criteria based on lifecycle management principles, the G7 Ocean Plastics Charter and the National Zero Waste Council’s design principles for waste prevention and systems thinking.
Submissions are open from August 1 through September 20, 2019.
