2018 Zero Waste Conference at a Glance
What: 8th annual Zero Waste Conference – presented by Metro Vancouver in collaboration with the National Zero Waste Council (#ZWC18)
Where: Vancouver Trade and Convention Centre, Vancouver, BC
When: Nov. 8 – 9, 2018 (8am – 5pm Day 1, 8am – 1pm Day 2)
Who: The #ZWC18 keynote speakers are futurist Gerd Leonhard, designer Dr. Leyla Acaroglu, and circular economy expert Dr. Wayne Visser, along with Arthur Huang, Mari Pantsar, Iain Gulland, and Henk Snoeken. Other speakers and panelists at this year’s event include entrepreneurs, politicians, researchers, and activists – all of who are committed to zero waste principles, the adoption of the circular economy, and addressing the growing negative impacts of waste on our economy and environment.
Why: The staggering quantities of waste generated by our current take-make-dispose economic model is unsustainable. Within the circular economy framework, methods such as design for disassembly, up-cycling of waste materials, and innovative approaches to ownership combine with new technologies and materials to ‘close the loop’, ensuring materials are kept out of the waste stream wherever possible.
Endorsed by influential organizations such as the Ellen MacArthur Foundation, Sitra, Zero Waste Scotland, Netherlands Circle Economy, McKinsey and Co, and Accenture, the circular economy is seen by many as a way to continue and expand the quality of life enjoyed on our planet, while living within the natural constraints of our resource and energy limitations.
